Rachel, the great French actress (tragédienne) was born at an inn in Mumpf, Switzerland to a family of wandering Jewish peddlers. Her family moved to Lyons in France, where she and her sister Sarah sang at the cafés. She and her sisters Sarah and Rebecca all performed on the stage, but it was Rachel who became by far the most famous.
