Biography

The son of Josiah Fegley and Catherine (Boughner) Fegley, Jeff was born in Quakake, in Rush Township, in 1856.[citation needed] In 1860, they lived in Rush Township, where his father worked as a blacksmith.[1] By 1870, the family lived in Barnesville, where his father worked as a farm laborer.[2] Jeff married Mary Elizabeth Eveland (1859-1886), the daughter of Daniel Webster and Susan Eveland, marrying in Schuylkill on October 24, 1879.[3] In 1880, Jefferson and Lizzie lived in Rush Township, where he worked as a brakeman for the railroad. [4] Their children included:

  1. Jessiah Thomas Fegley (1881-1918)
  2. Kathryn Rebecca Fegley (1882-1907)

His wife passed away in 1886 and Jeff remarried later that year, marrying Emma Correll (1866-1898), the daughter of John Correll and Katherine Nestor, marrying in Barnesville, Pennsylvania on December 25, 1887.[5] They had three children together:

  1. Charles Ellsworth Fegley (1887-1961)
  2. Lillian Fegley (1893-1947)
  3. Robert Leroy Fegley (1896-1979)

His second wife passed away in 1898 and, in 1900, Jeff lived in Rush Township with his five children and his widowed mother. He worked then as an engine hostler for the railroad; his son, Thomas, age 19, worked as a locomotive fireman; his daughter, Catherine, age 17, worked as a servant in a private home; and his son, Charles, age 12, worked as a mine laborer.[6] Jeff married a third time, marrying Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lutz (1870-1956), the daughter of Simpson Lutz and Margaret Moser. They married in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania on September 19, 1900.[7] Jeff and Lizzie had one daughter together, Ann Margaret Fegley (1901-1993).

The family moved to Philadelphia, residing in 1910 at 1235 56th Street.[8] Jeff worked as a night watchman at a printing establishment; his son, Charles, age 22; worked as a brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad; his daughter, Lillie, age 18, worked as a cutter at a paper mill; and his son, Robert, age 14, worked as a cash boy at a department store.

Jefferson Fegley passed away in Philadelphia at the age of 72[9] and is buried at Lehighton Cemetery in Lehighton, Pennsylvania.[10]
