Biography

Roger Federer is a Swiss former professional tennis player. He was ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 310 weeks.

Roger Federer was born on the 8th of August 1981 in Basel, Switzerland.[1] His father was Robert Federer, of Swiss-German descent, and his mother was Lynette (Durand) Federer, of South Africa.[1] Roger only had one sibling.[1] He grew up in nearby Birsfelden, Riehen, and then Münchenstein, close to the French and German borders, and speaks Swiss German, Standard German, English, and French.[1] His parents taught him how to play tennis, squash, basketball, and other sports. It is said that

Since the end of the 20th century, Martina Hingis and above all Roger Federer have been in the limelight, having achieved worldwide fame as the best tennis players.[2]

Roger was subject to compulsory military service, as were all male Swiss citizens.[1] He was ruled "unsuitable" in 2003 and so did not fulfill this obligation.[1] Also in 2003, Roger was described as being born in Bale, 185 cm tall, weighing 80 kg.[3] In regards to his success at Wimbledon, Federal Councilor Samuel Schmid said this:

[It is] "a historic day for Swiss sport. I hope that this remarkable feat will serve as an example to the youth of our country."[3]

Roger married Mirka Vavrinec, a former tennis player, on the 11th of April 2009.[4] She had retired seven years earlier due to a foot injury.[1][5] The ceremony was a small one, in his hometown of Basel.[4] According to Roger it was "a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion."[4] They had announced the month before that they were expecting their first child.[4] Roger and Mirka first had a set of identical twin girls,[6] and later fraternal twin boys.[1][7] His older sister had also bore twins.[1][8]
