Hi,

your given name "Living" is not allowed for active members of WikiTree. According to the section Name Fields for Living People "Anonymous" (or Anon) is an option.

Hi Living Farnham,

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles such as Pelham-840 using Wikipedia as the only source. This is a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources at the time of profile creation, as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz. Wikipedia is not considered a valid source.

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks! Francesca

Hi Francesca, thanks for your comment. I have recompleted the 1700 quiz. I should have communicated with project members prior to adding this. However, I cannot see reference to the term 'valid source' in fact it seems to be a subjective contested term on the G2G forum. The style guide does not refer to the term from what I can see. In my opinion Wikitree needs to build it's UK base of connections as there are too many US paths in the connection finder when there are many missing connected paths because of the lack of British nobility on the site. While an imperfect source I can't see why Wikitree would put people off from using it as a starting point for people to improve on in the future? But agreed should not have used it on a pre 1700 profile and will be more vigilant.

Hi, thanks for retaking the pre-1700 quiz!

Yes, I should have said "reliable sources" and provided a link to "Reliable sources for pre-1700 profiles in England": https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Project_Reliable_Sources This page goes into detail about a variety of sources and might answer some of your question.

Thank you again, Francesca

Thanks Francesca, this link to reliable sources is very useful and will make sure I thoroughly consult it prior to adding further profiles. This is very different to the term valid source. I do, however, note that this is an England project space and not the Style guide. I do think England project need to consider some of their activities, I am wondering if they are trying to exert a degree of authority over non project members. I have only added people who I know exist. For example after visiting a historic house or a notable who has had interaction with a family member. We have many profiles yet to be added to Wikitree and many speculative and unsourced profiles to improve. Although this experience has slightly dampened my enthusiasm, I personally take the comments in good faith and will use the opportunity to learn. However I wonder if this will be a universal reaction to such comments.

1. Who or what ultimately decides the proper style and format for a WikiTree profile's data fields, biography, and sources? 2. The Style Guide is where to find all the current rules — the ideals we aspire to — for the style and formatting of data fields, biographies, and sources on all profiles. 3. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Styles_and_Standards 4. Advanced genealogists who practice Elizabeth Shown Mills' approach (B) appreciate her more detailed observations regarding sources, information and evidence. (FAN club principle connections are evidence). 5. If you're adding value and integrating other content, there's nothing wrong with using Wikipedia as a source. 6. What is the purpose of adding sources to WikiTree profiles? To enable others to locate the source being cited and judge the accuracy of information. 7. Each project seems to have its own reliability criteria https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Project_Reliable_Sources Wikipedia: genealogical information in an otherwise well-researched article may not be supported by a source at all or the source may be one that WikiTree would consider unreliable. When citing Wikipedia as a source for parent/child relationship(s), birth, marriage, and/or death information, please include not only a link to the Wikipedia article and date accessed but also the source(s) cited by Wikipedia for genealogical facts from the article. 8. Before creating or editing any person born before 1700 you need to find out if there is a project where members collaborate on this time period and location. It is the only way to know whether a profile exists and who has been working on it. The project members will welcome your help.

Hi

Each country Project has its own guides, as there are different conventions depending on the country, and also different sources are used https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Reliable_Sources

Wikipedia itself says it's not a reliable source and explains why https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_not_a_reliable_source That's not to say that it can't be used as an additional source, but the aim with pre-1700 profiles is to add primary sources where possible or reliable secondary sources, as it helps to prevent errors, and we all aim for accuracy!

This is WikiTree's own page (outside of the Projects) which cover's pre-1700 profiles generally - it may help to explain: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

Please bear in mind that this only applies to pre-1700 profiles (though it's good practice for any profile). I hope that helps :)

Thanks very much with improving my Dolphin Cole profile and the invite to the England Project. Unfortunately, I appear to be limited in my Wikitree experience as use it on my mobile phone. This means that I cannot improve my GEDCOM imported sources by the looks of it as can't use the Sourcer or AGC extension. Even replying here if I navigate away the comment dissapears! This does not dampen my enthusiasm for Wikitree and I will endeavour to follow best practice to the best of my ability, albeit with limited resources!

Hi Anonymous

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for signing the Honor Code.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: New Member How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start. Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
