Biography

Notables Project
Arthur Fadden is Notable.

Arthur Fadden is the only member of the Country Party to become Prime Minister of Australia in a permanent rather than a 'caretaker' capacity. He became Prime Minister after Menzies resigned in 1941 but, less than six weeks later, his government was defeated on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Arthur William Fadden was born in Ingham, Queensland, on 13 April 1895, eldest of ten children of Irish-born parents Richard John Fadden, police constable, and his wife Annie, née Moorhead. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Richard had served in the Royal Irish Lancers before emigrating to Australia; he joined the Queensland Police Force and, about 1900, took charge of the station at Walkerston, near Mackay. Educated at the local state school, at 15 Artie began work as billy-boy to a gang of cane-cutters and soon became office-boy at the Pleystowe mill.

After primary education at Walkerston Public School he became 'billy boy' to a cane-cutting gang at 15. Later he joined the staff of Pleystowe sugar mill. At 18 he became Assistant Town Clerk of Mackay Town Council and was appointed Town Clerk in 1916. He studied accountancy, and from 1918 practised as an accountant in Townsville, where he later became an alderman on the city council.

He married Ilma Thornber in 1916, and they had four children.

He served as a Federal Member of Parliament representing Queensland seats from 1936 to 1958, as Leader of the Country Party from 1940 to 1958, and Treasurer from 1940-1 and 1949-58. He received a knighthood in 1951.
