Biography

Marian (“Marianna” in the birth record) is born on October 30, 1887 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Walter D. Ewer (c1848-?) and Anna M. Courtney (c1850-?). Both parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Marian is in the 1910 census, at the age of 22, living with her parents, three siblings and a sister-in-law, in Youngstown.

On May 2, 1912, Marian marries Charles Judson Paterson (1883-1962). The actual record of the marriage badly mangles the spelling of her name, showing it as “Marian Louise Eniver.” Charles was born in Rochester, New York, and had graduated from Cornell University in about 1907 with a civil engineering degree. His work had brought him to Ohio, likely to Cleveland, which is presumable how he met Marian. He went on, with two partners, to found The Paterson-Leitch Co.

By 1918 Marian and Charles were living at 3060 Coleridge Road, Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. This is about eight kilometres southeast of the centre of Cleveland. A Google Maps street view of the address shows a tree-lined street with solid two-story houses. It is unlikely the houses today would be the same as those in 1918.

The 1920 census records show Marian and Charles living in Cleveland Heights with two children: a six-year old Anne Maria and a four-year old Thomas H. There is also a servant living with the family. The 1930 census shows the family in the same place, now with a servant and three children: Anne (17), Thomas (14) and Caroline (9). Sometime prior to 1938, the family moves to South Euclid Village, just to the east of Cleveland Heights. Their address is 1621 Sheridan Road which puts them (in today’s geography) just beside the Mayfield County Club. A Google Maps street view of this address today does not show the house as there are too many trees on the lot for it to be visible. The family is found in South Euclude Village in the 1940 census. There now is only one child, the 18-year old Caroline, left at home and there still is a servant. Charles was financically successful. From the 1920 census on, the family always has a servant. The census records show that they lived in up-scale neighborhoods. Passenger lists from the port of New York (1938, 1941) show they took vacations in the Carabean. These same lists show that in June 1954 Marian and Charles sailed home from England on the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth in a first class cabin with ten pieces of luggage.

Marian dies at the age of 71 on February 24, 1959 in South Euclid. In August, 1962, Charles dies at the age of 79.

Marian and Charles had three children:

  • Anne Maria Paterson (1913-?) + Hugh M. Eaton (1910-1994)
  • Thomas Hugh Paterson (1916-1992) + Virginia Ely (1923-2009)
  • Caroline Paterson (1921-?) + Joseph E. (Sepp) Dietzgen (c1918-2003)
