Richard Stoddert Ewell was born in 1817, the son of Thomas Beale Ewell and Elizabeth S. Ewell. He passed away in 1872.[1]
He graduated from West Point in 1840. He fought in the Mexican-American War, where he was promoted to captain. In 1861, he resigned from the U.S. Army and became a Confederate officer, reaching the rank of Lieutenant General. After the war he retired to his wife's farm in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
