William was the son of Richard d'Evreux and Godeheut Barcelona..[1][2]
William is one of the few men who is confirmed by contemporary records, in this case William of Poitiers, to have been present on the Norman side at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. At this time his father was still count, and William may have been young. He later fought in the battle of Tinchebray in 1106, on the side of Henry I.[3]
He succeeded his father in 1067 was also still alive in 1086 and is mentioned in Domesday Book as a landholder in England. He was married to Havise, daughter of the count of Nevers. They had no issue and his heir was his sister Agnes's son Amaury de Montfort-l Amaury.[4]
His English lands at Domesday are summarized on the Open Domesday and PASE websites:
(Note that there was also a William of Évreux who was not a count, who held land under Roger de Lacy in Gloucestershire. His wife Heloise may have been a member of the Lacy family. William and Heloise did not have any surviving children, and so William's heir by 1166 was Walter d'Evreux.[5])
