Biography

It is likely that Rachel Forsyth was born in the late 1700s, but the year is uncertain. According to the U.S. census records, she was born between 1794 and 1804,[1] or between 1790 and 1800.[2] Combining this census information gives a probable birth range between 1794 and 1800. Her birthplace is also unclear. The early census records only list the heads of households with no birthplace information available. However, information about her place of birth can be obtained from the census records of her children. Unfortunately, there is no consistency in these census records. A variety of birth locations in the U.S. are listed for her, including Tennessee, [3] South Carolina,[4] Maine,[5]North Carolina,[6][7] West Virginia,[8] and Illinois.[9] Three records also list her birthplace as France.[10][11][12]

The Obituary for Willis Crabb states: "Mary Hester Forsythe, daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Estes) Forsythe, who was born April 19, 1830 in Vandalia, Ill..."[13]

On July 15, 1830, Rachel Forsyth sold two plots of land in the town of Carmi, White County, Illinois, to Thomas Shannon for $127.[14] She is described in the land deed as a widow, indicating that her husband, Thomas Forsyth, had died prior to the date of sale. Rachel Forsyth does not appear in subsequent census records for White County.
