James was born in 1844. His father was William Erwin, born in Ireland. His mother, Julia, was born in Ohio. They lived in Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio in 1850. James enlisted in Company B of the 103rd OVI on 18 Aug 1862 as a musician. He mustered out with the company on 12 Jun 1865. He passed away in 1895.
