Thomas Erle was born at Morden in Dorset on the 5th of March 1621, son of Sir Walter Erle [1] of Charborough House in Dorset, and his wife Anne Dymoke, [2] daughter of Francis Dymoke. [3] He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on the 18th of February 1636, aged 14.
In April 1640, he was elected Member of Parliament for Milborne Port in the Short Parliament and for Wareham for the Long Parliament in November. He sat until 1648 when he was excluded in Pride's Purge. Meanwhile he was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1647 and was a friend of Anthony Ashley Cooper, the future Earl of Shaftesbury. He was chosen as a commissioner on the trial of King Charles in 1649, but did not sit.
Thomas married Susanna Fiennes, daughter of William Fiennes 3rd Viscount Saye and Sele and his wife, Elizabeth Temple. Their children included General Thomas Erle who was one of those who helped instigate the Glorious Revolution. [4]
Thomas died in 1650, and is said to have been buried at Axmouth in Devon. [5][6]
