David Elliot Erikson was born on October 7, 1948, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. His parents were Esther M. (Pederson) Erikson and William I. Erikson. His first residence was Island Park, Minnesota. In 1949, he moved with his family to Kodiak, Alaska. From Kodiak in the spring of 1950, he and his family moved to Anchorage followed by a move to Homer, AK in the fall of 1950. In 1951, his father, William I Erikson, filed on a parcel of Federal land under the Homestead Act of 1862. He and his family lived on the Erikson Homestead until the winter of 1954 when they moved for medical reasons to Franklin, Minnesota, In January, 1955, he and his family moved to Long Lake, Minnesota, where David attended first through sixth grade. In February, 1960, he and his family moved back to Anchorage, AK. He attended Turnagain Elementary, Clark Jr. High, Wendler Jr. High, and East Anchorage High School. He graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1966. David attended the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and the University of Nevada, Reno. He received a BS in Wildlife Biology and a MS in Biology.
