Biography

Lars Eriksen was born 4 Jan 1811 at the Logn ytre farm in Hemnes parish, Høland (now Aurskog-Høland), Akershus, Norway. He was a son of Erik Rasmussen and Kirstine Larsdatter. Baptised 13 Jan 1811 at Hemnes church in Høland. Confirmed on 2 Oct 1825 at Løken church.

Lars Eriksen from Logn and Anne Katrine Bergersdatter from Grårud, originally from Nordre Teig in Enebakk were married on 30 Oct 1837 at Høland. They lived at Logn where they had 7 children. Of these, 3 children immigrated to America, settling in Minnesota. Two of these were the sons Christian and Hans Peter, who took the surname Lewis in America. Lewis is probably an anglicized version of the farm name Logn or their patronymic name Larsen. The third was their daughter Andrine, who married Andrew Teig.

  1. Christian (Larsen) Lewis, 1839-1925, to America 1868
  2. Andrine Larsdatter, 1842-1921, to America 1881
  3. Elen Marie Larsdatter, 1846-1896
  4. Johan Larsen, 1848-1918
  5. Hans Peter (Larsen) Lewis, 1851-1918, to America 1871
  6. Andreas Larsen, 1854-1884
  7. Bolette Cecilie Larsdatter, 1857-1935

By a deed dated 16 Mar 1847, Lars bought the farm from his father Erik Rasmussen. A contract for providing support for his elderly parents was also established that year.

In the 1865 Census, Lars is listed as "gaardbruger" (farmer), with his wife Anne Katrine, and all seven of their children: Christian age 26, Andrine age 23, Elen Maria age 20, Johan age 17, Hans Petter age 14, Andreas age 12, and Bolette Cecilie age 9. Also living with them is Lars' mother, Kirstine Larsdatter, age 78, who is receiving support.

In the 1875 Census, Lars is listed as "Gaardbruger, Selveier" (farmer and farm owner), with his wife Anne Katrine, and five of their children: Johan, Andreas, Elen Marie, Bolette Cecilie, and Lars' mother Kirstine Larsdatter, who is still receiving support from her son. Their sons Christian and Hans Peter had moved to America, and Andrine was married and living at nearby Teig in Enebakk.

In the 1891 Census, Lars is listed as "Gaardbruger, Selveier" and a widower. He is living with three of his children, Johan, who is doing agricultural work; Elen Marie, who "provides the house for her father", and Bolette Cecilie, who takes care of livestock and housekeeping.

Lars died on 23 Nov 1900 at the age of 89. The cause of death was given as liver disease. He was buried 5 Dec 1900 at Hemnes parish. A deed dated 31 Oct 1911 mentions upon his death, Lars Eriksen left 5 adult children, 3 of which were in America, and per a declaration fro 5 Feb 1896, the children in America gave up their right to the farm to the other two, Johan and Cecilie Larsen. The deed mentions them selling the farm to Anton Gulbrandsen.
