Richard was born in 1901. He was the son of Gervase Elwes and Winefride Fielding. He passed away after 1911.[1]
In 1926 he married Mary Freya Sykes, elder daughter of Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet. They had 2 sons and 3 daughters, the eldest was broadcaster Mary Freya "Polly" Elwes, who married fellow broadcaster Peter Dimmock.
In the second World War he served with the 69th Infantry Brigade as a staff captain and was evacuated with the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. He spent the rest of the war at the War Office as an assistant adjutant general, in charge of English prisoners of war matters. He was appointed OBE and received the Efficiency Decoration in 1944 and received the American Bronze Star Medal in 1945.
He became King's Counsel (KC - senior barrister) in 1950.[2] In 1958, he was appointed a Justice of the High Court of Justice, assigned to the Queen's Bench Division, and received the customary knighthood.
