Joseph Elsum was born in 1853 at sea, on the "Calliope", the son of Sarah (King) Elsum and Joseph Elsum.^{[citation needed]}

He married Elizabeth Fitch in 1875 in Victoria, Australia.^[1] Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
