Carl Frank Els was born on March 14, 1900 in Waterloo, Oklahoma Territory, Oklahoma, son of Frederick William Els (1863–~1936) and Marie Henriette Elizabeth Heers (1866–1944).
His siblings were:

Carl died on September 11, 1989, aged 89. He was buried in Grandview Cemetery, Wray, Colorado.
