William Grey Ellison was born in Dublin, Ireland; the son of John William Ellison (a Conservative Member of Parliament for Tyrone) and Elizabeth Phoebe Ellison, née Porter.
The family name was changed by his father to "Ellison-Macartney" in 1859, as the condition of an inheritance. [1]
He married Ettie Myers Scott at Holcombe, Somerset, in 1897.
