Edgar Roy Ellis was born on 30th May 1910 at Ararat, Victoria, Australia. He was the eldest child of Edgar Ellis and Eleanor Johnson.[1]
On 11th March 1941, Edgar enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force for service overseas during the Second World War.[2] His brother, Jack was then redeploying from North Africa to Greece and would become a prisoner of war within two months. Edgar was allocated to the 2/1st Pioneer Battalion, with whom he attained the senior non-commissioned rank of Staff Sergeant. By September 1942, the 2/1st was deployed to Papua: D Company to Milne Bay and A, B, and C Companies to Owers' Corner at the base of the Kokoda Track and up the track through Uberi to Ioribaiwa. There, they patrolled and manned defensive positions along Imita Ridge and helped the 14th Field Regiment move their 25-pounder guns up the track to the foot of Imita Ridge. For the next seven months the pioneers worked as miners and labourers, producing crushed metal used to surface airfields and roads. D Company helped to develop the Milne Bay infrastructure, building trestle bridges and maintaining roads. Their next mission was to Borneo in 1945 where, after working to consolidate the Balikpapan beachhead, the battalion helped defend Balikpapan Harbour.[3] Edgar was discharged from the AIF on 25th January 1946.
He passed away in 1975 at New South Wales.[4]
