Anti-slavery and women's rights advocate, historian, and a co-founder of Swarthmore College
Martha was born in 1795 to George Ellicott and Elizabeth Brooke, well-established members of the local Quaker community. Her father invited Native American leaders to his home and he was a close family friend and mentor to Benjamin Banneker.
She became the Elder of the Baltimore Quaker Meeting at age 35. She worked to expand educational opportunities to women and people who were formerly enslaved.
She was a co-founder of Swarthmore College, the second co-educational college in the United States.
She passed away in 1873. She is buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
