Biography

Nathaniel Elithorpe was the son of Thomas Elithorpe and his first wife Unknown name. He may have migrated with his parents and siblings in the Company of Ezekiel Rogers in 1638, however no listing of the Ezekiel Rogers Company exists, so the year of their migration is conjecture.[1][2]

Around the age of 25, Nathaniel married Mary Batt on 16 Dec1657 in Rowley.1 Mary was about 21 at the time of their marriage.

Mary, the daughter of Nicholas and Lucy Batt, was born in 1636 in Newbury, Mass.1 She had at least one sister, named Ann.

Nathaniel and Ann had at least four children:

i. Mary Elithorpe, who was born 4 Jan 1659 in Rowley.2

ii. Margaret Elithorpe, who was born 24 July 1672 in Ispwich, Mass.1 Her first marriage was to Samuel Wood on 21 Jan 1688 in Rowley.5 Her second marriage was to Jonathan Harriman on 19 Aug 1691 in Rowley.1 She died 25 Jan 1754 in Rowley.1, 4

iii. Nathaniel Elithorpe, who was born 10 July 1675 in Ipswich, Mass.3 He married Hannah Dummer on 3 Dec 1700 in Rowley.3 He died 28 Sept 1718.3

iv. Abigail Elithorpe, who was born 16 March 1678 in Ispwich.1 She married Gershom Nelson on 17 July 1700 in Rowley.3 She died 25 Dec 1765 in Rowley.1

By 1663, Nathaniel and Mary were living in Ipswich.6

On 5 May 1664, a Martha Smith, possibly of Rowley and the daughter of Hugh and Mary Smith, chose Nathaniel to be her guardian. He was bound with 40 pounds “to pay her portion when due.” Nathaniel also acknowledged the receipt from Jeremiah Elmsworth, the husband of Mary Smith, of 22 pounds, 13 shillings, six pence, which was Martha’s legacy.7

Mary died around the age of 73 on 9 Jan 1709 in Rowley.1

Nathaniel did not long outlive his wife. He died around the age of 77 on 10 March 1709 in Rowley.1
