Nathaniel Ellery was the fourth child born, in 1683, to William Ellery and his second wife, Mary Coit Ellery, in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts .
Nathaniel and Abigail Norwood, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Norwood, were married by Justice of the Peace John Newman, in Gloucester, 11 January 1711. She died a few months after their marriage in April 1711.
Ann Sargent, daughter of William Sargent 2nd and Mary Duncan Sargent, married the widowed Nathaniel Ellery, merchant mariner, in 1720/1721, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The couple had children: Ann, Mary, Jane, Nathaniel, Jerusha, William and Daniel Ellery.
Captain Ellery served his community (as selectman) and was prosperous in trade. John Singleton Copley painted a portrait of Ann Sargent Ellery in 1765; it was bequeathed to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts by the Estates of Fanny and Henrietta Lawrence in 1971.
He died in his 79th year: "Ellery, Nathaniel, Capt. at Gloucester, 30 May 1761, at 79 years. News-Let." He was buried in First Parish Burial Ground , and his estate was settled in July 1761.
