Biography

Nathaniel Ellery was the fourth child born, in 1683, to William Ellery and his second wife, Mary Coit Ellery, in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts .

Nathaniel and Abigail Norwood, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Norwood, were married by Justice of the Peace John Newman, in Gloucester, 11 January 1711. She died a few months after their marriage in April 1711.

Ann Sargent, daughter of William Sargent 2nd and Mary Duncan Sargent, married the widowed Nathaniel Ellery, merchant mariner, in 1720/1721, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The couple had children: Ann, Mary, Jane, Nathaniel, Jerusha, William and Daniel Ellery.

Captain Ellery served his community (as selectman) and was prosperous in trade. John Singleton Copley painted a portrait of Ann Sargent Ellery in 1765; it was bequeathed to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts by the Estates of Fanny and Henrietta Lawrence in 1971.

He died in his 79th year: "Ellery, Nathaniel, Capt. at Gloucester, 30 May 1761, at 79 years. News-Let." He was buried in First Parish Burial Ground , and his estate was settled in July 1761.

I am the 7th great granddaughter of Nathaniel Ellery. How can I add my sources to this profile?

Hi cousin! I find some of this stuff hard to find and I can’t figure out how to just add you to the trusted list, but if you look on the right where it says Collaboration, click on request to be added to trusted list and that will give me some button to push! Regardless, you should be able to Click edit and add more information and sources.

Bobby, Please remember that you should add your sources for information on profiles. And that the 'United States' didn't exist until after 1776. Thanks! Kay Wilson, Ranger
