President of Harvard University from 1869 to 1909. After studying the education system in Europe for 2 years, he instituted reforms at Harvard, transforming it from classical provincial college to a research-oriented curriculum to meet the needs of the industrial age, creating the professional powerhouse that it is known as today.
He summered on Mount Desert Island, Maine, and was a key figure in the creation of Acadia National Park. He died on the island in Northeast Harbour, Maine in 1926. He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
