Jane was born in 1827 in Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of an officer, Stephen Egan and Eleanor Ellen Leffler.
She was brought up in Canada and later in Bermuda. She married a young military surgeon named William Deeble. Her husband would serve in Crimea and in India. They had four children while they were in India before they returned to Britain at the end of 1865.
Jane's son Benjamin William Chatterton Deeble was baptised on 18 January 1859 in Bombay Presidency, India.[1][2]
Jane's son Henry Perceval Deeble was baptised on 20 February 1860 in Bombay Presidency, India.[3]
Jane's son Stephen Lawson Deeble was baptised on 8 March 1862 in Bombay Presidency, India.[4][5]
Jane's daughter Ellen Sophia Deeble was baptised on 8 January 1865 in Bombay Presidency, India.[6][7]
Her husband passed away in Ethiopia during the Abyssinian Campaign in 1868, while Jane was living in Glasgow.
She decided that she wanted to be a nurse and her ambition was to lead the nurses at Netley Hospital.
In the 1911 census Jane (age 83), Army Offices Widow Pensioner, was the widowed mother-in-law of John William St John Hughes in St Helens, Hampshire, England.[8]

Jane's death (age 86) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1913 in the Isle Of Wight district.[9] Jane was buried on 11 September 1913 in Ryde New Cemetery, Ryde, Isle of Wight Unitary Authority, Isle of Wight, England.[10][11] Jane died on 8 September 1913 and her estate passed probate on 29 September 1913 in Isle of Wight, England.[12]
