Biography

Catalina Johanna Edel, daughter of Cornelis Edel (1852–1924) and Anna Kant van den Heuvel (1868–1928) was born on 29 May 1895 in Pella, Marion County, Iowa, United States.[1] She was the first of her parents' children to be born in the United States after their emigration from the Netherlands.

Catalina was born into a devoutly religious farming family. After immigrating to America, her parents first settled in Pella, Marion County, Iowa, where her father farmed for 25¢ per day.[2]

On 7 September 1896, when Catalina was a little over one year old, her younger brother Dirk Jan Edel was also born in Pella, Marion County, Iowa.[2]

By 1898, Catalina's family moved from Pella, Iowa, to Richland Township, Jasper County, Iowa, United States.[2]

In 1900, Lena (age 5) was living with her parents and eight siblings in Jefferson County, Iowa, United States.[3]

In the spring of 1907, Catalina's family moved to Palco, Kansas, on the Graham-Rooks County line.[2]

Catalina's father established a Dutch Reform Church in Palco, Kansas, originally in the Brownville school house.[2] He was a layman and wrote his own sermons.[2]

By 1910, Catalina's family had moved to Morland Township, Graham County, Kansas, United States.[2]
