Research Notes

I can find no Philippina in the 1798 Grimm census where she should have been listed as a one-year-old.

In comparing the 1834 census with the 1857 census, it looks like Philippina and Christina are the same person. Either they were a first and a middle name, or there may have been a clerical error in recording the correct name by the census taker. These two women appear to be the same person because:

  • Both appear as the wife of Wilhelm Rau, family #183 in the 1834 census, and family #206 in the 1857 census.
  • Both are the same age.
  • In the 1857 census, she is not listed as the step-mother of the same children that appeared in the 1834 census.
  • She is not listed in the 1857 census as Wilhelm Rau's second wife.

If they are the same person, then she was, in fact, born in Grimm to Wilhelm Eberhard and his wife Elizabeta Reifschneider, who was originally from Kutter. Wilhelm Eberhard's parents were Georg Eberhard and his wife Ursula, both original settlers of the Colony of Grimm.
