Biography

Leonard Eaton, Jr. was born September 22, 1840, in Kentucky, a son of Leonard Eaton and Sally Lee. Leonard is found, at the age of 11 years, living with his parents in Barren county, Kentucky, with five older siblings living in the household. [1] In 1860, Leonard is 19 years of age, and living with his parents, in "District 2," Barren county, Kentucky. [2]

On March 19, 1869, in Bowling Green, Warren county, Kentucky, Leonard married Pheobe J. Irvin. [3] Their names appear on one register as "Lenard Eaton" and "Pheby Jane Irvin" daughter of "Jaeson and Sarh" Irvin. [4]

"Lenard and Phebee J." Eaton are found on the United States Census of 1880, living in Tracy, Barren county, Kentucky. Children living in the household are Sarah T., age 10, John J., age 7, Virginia A. age 6, Mary A., age 4 and Margarett, age 3 . Pheobe's place of birth is listed as Tennessee and her estimated birth year is 1852. [5] "Lenard and Felie J." Eaton are found on the 1900 census. Lenard is 60 years of age and his wife is 47. John, Mary, Margret are joined by younger siblings, Canzady, Nancy, Sillie [Lillie] and Charlie. [6] Leonard and Phoebe are found on the 1910 census, living in Brush Creek, Monroe county, Kentucky. John, Margaret, Nancy, Lillie and Charles are still living in the household with them. [7]

Leonard died in 1919, in Monroe county, Kentucky. His death record gives his parents names as Lenard Eaton and Sallie Lee. Researchers Notes

On April 9, 1973, Gladys (Benedict) Wilson interviewed Nannie Christmas Eaton, a daughter of Leonard Eaton, Jr. born May 18, 1887, in Barren County, Kentucky. Nannie said that her mother, Phoebe Ervin was formerly of East Tennessee, and that her father, from Barren County. Her grandfather, Leonard Eaton, Sr. originally came from Georgia and her grandmother was Salle Lee, a sister to Louisa Ann Lee, who married John B. Benedict. Louisa and John were the parents of John Garfield Benedict, who is the father of Jewel Gladys (Benedict) Wilson.
