Tolland County was created in 1785 from portions of eastern Hartford County and western Windham County.

Ebenezer married Mary Humphrey on 12 May 1753 at Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, officiated by Rev. Abel Stiles.[2]

U.S. Revolutionary War

According to the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), Ebenezer Eaton's patriotic service was as a tithingman in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, where he lived at the time.[19] Ebenezer did not serve as a soldier in the military.

His son of the same name, Ebenezer Eaton Jr. (1760-1839), served as a soldier during the U.S. Revolutionary War. More detail about his service is on his profile.[20][21][22]

Neither Ebenezer Eaton Sr. (1733-1815) or his son of the same name, Ebenezer Eaton Jr. (1760-1839), was their distant cousin Ebenezer Eaton (1750-1825) of Plainfield, Connecticut who served in the 1775 Lexington alarm and in Capt. Samuel Hall's Company in Maj. Backus' Light Horse Regiment in 1776.[23][24]

The service (and other records) of these three men named Ebenezer Eaton from Connecticut are often confused. A descendant of the subject of this profile, Ebenezer Eaton Sr. (1733-1815), wrote a SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) application based on the service of the other Ebenezer Eaton (1750-1825).[25] The application appears to have been questioned, as the DAR database now records all three of the above men as separate with different vital records and with service as indicated and researched in this profile. The same descendant also sent a supplemental application based on the proven service of Ebenezer Eaton Jr. (1760-1839), son of this Ebenezer Eaton Sr. (1733-1815). Unfortunately, the original application for Ebenezer Sr. is available as a source that is taken at face value.

Links to the info of the three patriots on the DAR database are provided in citations and Sources section of this profile.

Death

Ebenezer Eaton died on the 9 Jan 1815 in Sherburne, Chenango County, New York, and was buried there in Sherburne Quarter Cemetery.[26] At his side was buried his wife, Mary (Humphrey) Eaton, who died a year later on 20 Apr 1816.[27]

Research Notes

Conflicting info in Molyneux's Eaton Families book

The lineage in Nellie Z.R. Molyneux's 1911 book, History Genealogical and Biographical of the Eaton Families [28] for Ebenezer Eaton (b. 1733/34-1815), son of Thomas Eaton and Elizabeth Parker, conflicts with updated research.

The book does not name his wife, his death date, or death location. The only children's names that are correct are Ebenezer and Elizabeth. It appears to combine information for several men of the same name. I understand the challenges of writing such a book without access to sources that are readily available today.

Today, we have records of Ebenezer Eaton, Sr's marriage in Ashford, Windham, Connecticut; the births of his children in Ashford, listing their parents; and death and burial in Sherburne, New York.

This note is inserted at the end of his section in the book: "Some of the descendants of Ebenezer Eaton live in Chenango County, N.Y. ...

The book has a questionable short description under his son Ebenezer Jr's name, with no vital records: "Ebenezer, jr. removed to Rome, N.Y., where in 1799, with Thos. Walker, he was editor of the Columbia Patriotic Gazette. In 1810 he retired..."

However, records show clearly his son Ebenezer Jr. moved to Bennington County, Vermont, where his children were born, and then lived and died in Sherburne, Chenango County, where his father and mother also moved.
