Ithamar Eaton was born in Haverhill, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay on 13 Mar 1743,[citation needed] and was baptized there on 20 Mar 1743. He was the son of Samuel Eaton and Hannah Emmerson.[1]
It is probable that Ithamar left Haverhill in the mid-1760s to establish a farm on the New Hampshire frontier, in Weare (after 1771, in Hillsborough County), not far north of the border of Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.
On 23 Feb 1769, he married Mary Ordway of Kingston, Province of New Hampshire, in Weare.[2]
Military Service: The American Revolution
Ensign Ithamar Eaton served with Kelley's Regiment of Volunteers, New Hampshire Militia during the American Revolution.
During the American Revolution, Ithamar served as an ensign in Captain Aaron Quinby's volunteer company, Colonel Moses Kelley's regiment, participating in the expedition to Rhode Island. He was listed on the payroll for August of 1778, when he received a total of £15.10.8 for 24 days, covering wages, travel expenses and subsistence for the period from 6 Aug to 27 Aug, plus two days for travel home.[3][4]
Civilian Life
Before war broke out, Ithamar had married Mary Ordway on 23 Feb 1769, in Weare, New Hampshire.[5] They had nine children, all born in Weare:
Peter Eaton (b. 3 Mar 1770;[6] m. Elizabeth Brackenbury, 8 Dec 1796;[7] d. 31 Aug 1815)[8]
Nathan Eaton (b. 25 Nov 1771;[9] d. 29 Sep 1796 Weare)[10]
Samuel Eaton (b. 10 Feb 1773;[11] d. 21 Oct 1805)[12]
Mary (Ordway) Eaton died before 31 Dec 1805, when Ithamar remarried the widow, Hannah (Haskell) Low in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.[24]
Ithamar Eaton died at the age of 74, on 11 Nov 1817, in Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.[25] He was buried there in the Eaton Cemetery.[26]
Research Notes
Place of Birth: Find A Grave: Memorial #35130701 for Ithamar Eaton has an incorrect place of birth (Plaistow, Rockingham County, New Hampshire), probably based on the index card record of his death in New Hampshire.[27] Requested correction of Memorial. Anderson-27719 04:06, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Erroneous Identification of Second Wife: According to Batchelder [28] Ithamar's second wife, Hannah, was the widow of Samuel Eaton of Plaistow, NH, who had been admitted to the East Kingston church from Plaistow Oct 7, 1759, probably not long after the marriage. She had Eaton children: Obadiah, Betty, Peter (?), and Ithamar. She died in Weare, NH Sep 2, 1802, ae 90. This is an obvious error: Hannah, widow of Samuel Eaton, was Ithamar's mother, not his wife, as Samuel Eaton was his father.
