Rachel Eaton was a child of Francis Eaton and his 3rd wife, Christian Penn.[1][2] Rachel, wife of Joseph Ramsden, testified 1 Aug 1648 "aged about 23 years"[3]] so born about 1625. She testified again 5 Oct 1652 at age at 26 years or thereabouts so born about 1626.[4][1] We know she was born before the 22 May 1627 cattle division and Governor Bradford tells us Rachel was the daughter of the third wife.[5] There is a 4 Dec 1626 apprenticeship agreement naming Eaton's wife Dorothy (the second wife). The news of Dorothy's death may not have traveled to England when the agreement was recorded but certainly it would not have been many months before indicating that Rachel was probably born in early 1627.[6]
7 Oct 1651 Goodwife Ramsden was presented at court for "lacivius goeing in the companie of young men" but was cleared with an admonition.[10]
4 May 1652 "whereas Joseph Ramsden hath for som time liued with his family remotely in the woods from naighbours, whereby his wife hath been exposed to great hardship and perill of loosing her life, and other inconveniences haue followed therupon, the Court haue ordered, that said Joseph Ramsden bee warned by the cunstable of Plymouth to bring his wife and family, with all convenient speed near unto som naighborhood, that soe shee may bee in a way of healp, as nessesitie shall require, as he will answare the neglect thereof at his perill."[11]
3 June 1656 "Wheras Joseph Ramsden hath liued long in the woods, in an vnciuell way, in the woods, with his wife alone, wherby great inconveniencies haue followed, the Court haue ordered, that hee repaier downe to sum naighborhood betwixt this and October next, or that then his house bee pulled downe."[12]
Rachel died between 3 June 1656[12] and 16 Oct 1661, when Joseph remarried to Mary Savory.[9][13]
Child:
Daniel Ramsden b. 14 Sep 1649, Plymouth; d. after 1684.[14]
He is refered to in a deed by his father as eldest son Daniel Ramsden, implying there may be other children, but none have been identified.[15]
