WIFE'S DILEMMA "Would Not See the Baby" DECREE GRANTED Five months after the marriage of Kate Laura Webster to Charles Edward Webster; the husband, a clerk, was arrested on a charge of having embezzled £600, the property of his employers, the Portland Cement Company, Rivervale. Webster, who was 19 years of age, was subsequently committed to an institution during His Majesty's pleasure. Three months after he was released. Proceeding to the house where his wife resided he procured his "things" and departed. Questioned regarding his intentions, he informed his wife that it was no business of hers. The sequel was heard in the Divorce Court this morning, when Mrs. Webster petitioned Mr. Justice Burnside to dissolve the marriage. Slight of figure, clad plainly in a navy serge costume, the petitioner recounted the details of her domestic unhappiness in a firm, cultured voice until questioned with regard to the baby. "When he came to the house and told me he was going away I was staggered," said witness, sobbing. Thinking that the sight of the baby might impress him I offered to show him the baby. He didn't want to see it.. I have never seen him since, except once, in a street in Fremantle. Sir Walter James, with Mr. S. B. Connor, appeared for the petitioner. The respondent was not represented. Sir Walter said that the parties were married on March 13, 1923. Both were about 19 years of age. On August 29 the husband was committed to a reformatory during His Majesty's pleasure. "He seems to have got out very quickly," declared counsel, referring to the fact that Webster was released on November 7. "The order was rather ineffective." Petitioner said that the child was born on June 28, 1923. From the time of the marriage relations between herself and husband were not of the happiest. Respondent came home late, on one occasion absenting himself from her father's house, where they lived, for a period of three days. A decree nisi was granted, returnable in six months. Petitioner was given the custody of the child.
