(6) FAMILY OF JOHN E. EARLE (E 186).
JOHN E. EARLE, the seventh son of Captain Edward Earle and Sichy Van Dine, was born in Dutchess County, N. Y., on Sept. 26, 1800, and died at Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Jan. 1, 1874.
The interment was in the “Old Fulton Street Cemetery” there.
About 1835 he became a private in the “Fifth Company” of the 27th Regiment, New York State Militia, the predecessor of the 7th Regiment, N. G. S. N. Y., and served many years. He held a commission as Lieutenant when he resigned.
It is interesting to note that the Seventh Regiment was a “family regiment” with us. There were fully as many of my mother’s (Ann Eliza Hedden) relatives, the Bogerts and the Quackenbushes and others, who were members of the regiment, as the Earles. John E. Earle was at one time the Adjutant of the Regiment.
John E. Earle was twice married. The first marriage was on August 24, 1825, to Mary Smith Rutzer, born Dec. 11, 1808; died July 7, 1840.
Her parents were: Henry Rutzer, b. 5-9-1772; d. 4-17-1814; and Mary Ravo (no dates).
