Biography

Hermann (Dönges) Donges has roots in the region now known as Hessen, Germany.

Hermann was born 01 Jan 1846 in Birkenbringhausen, Hesse, Germany. [1] [2]. Buried in the Old church of England section of the Young Cemetery.[3]

Hermann emigrated from Germany to Australia aged 16. He travelled with his sister Marie and her husband Hermann Goos, they departed Hamburg, Germany aboard the Vessel "Cesar Godeffroy" on the 29th Nov. 1862 bound for Moreton Bay, QLD, Australia. Occupation - Farmer (Landarbeiter).
Hermann settled in the Young, NSW district staying close to his brother, sister and their families.

Hermann, at 63 years of age on 29th Oct. 1909 applied for Naturalization [4]. Certificate issued on 2nd Dec. 1909. On the 14th Feb (Naturalization Papers: Reference: National Archives of Australia Series No: A1; Citation: NAA: A1, 1909/12258; Item: ID 5378). 1910 Hermann received from the Secretary to the Department of External Affairs, Certificate of Naturalization No. 8588.
In these Documents Hermann describes himself as residing in Young for 46 years since his arrival from Germany about March 1863, a farmer, a single man and care of his niece Amelia's husband James S. Fisher, Clarke Street, Young, NSW. This is the same residence where Christoff died in 1901.
Hermann died on the 23 May 1928
