Biography

Sarah Ann DUNK was born in England on 9 Jan 1825. Her parents were Jesse DUNK and Charlotte Martha SELLENS. Sarah was the 4th of their 7 children.

She migrated to Australia with her family (father, stepmother Susannah SILVERS, and 6 sibs) in the bounty vessel Florist[1] arriving 26 Oct 1839. She was aged 14 years.

The family proceeded to Camden NSW where work on the Macarthur estates awaited them. Her father was promised 20 pounds per year, and the family usually worked for free until the boys established themselves elsewhere, and the girls married away.

She married Charles Pratt at Campbellfield NSW on 14 Dec 1840, [2]. Charles was aged 22 years, and Sarah was aged 16 years.

The marriage is thought to have taken place in the original section of the church, since rebuilt. Sophia and Frederick VENESS acted as witnesses to signing the register. Their place of abode was given as Raby, a property then ownd by Alexander Riley, a name who figured promenantly in early Australian history. Some of the children's birth records have the parent's abode shown as Smeaton on church records for the parents. (This property was said to be situated about 2km east of Narellan NSW.) [3].

They had 5 children:

  1. James, b 1841, d 1914
  2. George, b 1842, d 1917
  3. John Remngton, b 1844, d 1904
  4. Charlotte Jane (HARDIMAN), b 1846, d 1920
  5. Charles, b 1848 Campbellfield NSW, d 1922 at Old Junee NSW.

The couple were together for 38 years until Sarah died in 1878. Charles lived until 1881.

Sarah Ann PRATT died at NSW in 1878, aged 53 years[4].
