Research Notes Discrepancy

Two Quaker Duncan families of Fairfax Co. VA 1748 to Newberry and Edgefield Co. SC;

  • Richard Duncan (b.1722, d. by 1803), son of Patrick Duncan and wife Mary of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co. MD 1709-1729.
  • Samuel Duncan who died 1770 Craven Co. SC, wife Sarah;
  • Parents may be Samuel Duncan and Margaret Linn - their son Samuel presumed to be born about 1720-1725 in Dundee, Scotland, and died about 1770 in Craven, Chester, South Carolina; married Sarah Embree about 1744, (Sarah, daughter of Moses Embree and Mary Southard Spragg.)
  • Date Discrepancy with Scotland Records show son of Samuel and Margaret Linn born about 1770[1]
  • Although Goose Creek was a Quaker settlement, Samuel Sr. is not mentioned in church records. (His son Samuel Jr. is documented) (Presumed wife is Mary Ann Embree)
  • Samuel May be a brother (or relative) of Richard Duncan
  • Samuel's parents may have been Patrick Duncan and wife Mary of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co. MD 1709-1729.

Birth Estimate Before 1700 (Scotland) -1725 (may be MD)
Marriage Estimate 1720-1750 Sarah Unknown (presumed to be Embree) (probably married in Virginia)
Death Estimate Before 4 Sep 1770, Bush River, Craven County, (now Chester County), South Carolina (Age about 70 years)

Samuel Sr. and Sarah sold land in Virginia and moved to a Quaker settlement in South Carolina called Bush River, near Newberry. In 1767, Samuel Sr. had 350 acres surveyed for him in the fork between the Broad and Saluda rivers on a small branch of Bush Creek adjoining David Hammer and Wm. Austel, in old Berkeley County, So. Carolina. [2]

This plat was certified for Sarah Dunkin on 4 Sep 1770, after Samuel's death. On 19 Sep 1770 it was granted to her and memorialized by her (land plat 11-415, Royal Land grant 21-72, Memorial 10-254).

(Charleston, South Carolina) Probate Records Inventories 1771-1774 (Vol. Z) (194,636) Z-137: Inventory of estate of Samuel Dunkin, deed, incl. 4 cows, 5 head of young (cows), 2 guns and a barrel, I rifle gun, sundry household goods, 2 spinning wheels, carpenters tools, woman's saddle, beds and furniture, a saddle, bridge and saddle bags, 1 old Negro man, looking glass, bed, flour, etc. The above is a just and true inventory of the goods and chattels shewed us by Sarah Dunkin and appraised, 12 July 1771. Duncan-3441 and Duncan-522 appear to represent the same person because: Birth year and location is the same, death dates are similar in same county in South Carolina.
