Arthur represented the United States in Track & Field in the Paris Olympics of 1900.
Arthur Duffey was born on June 14, 1879 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. He was the son of Arthur Duffey and Katherine A. Kelley[1][2][3]
Arthur was considered to be the fastest man in the world in 1900, winning the Amateur Athletic Union 100 meter dash in 1899 and the Amateur Athletic Association(AAA) title in 1900.[4] He went to the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France as the favorite to win the 100 meter dash. He was in the lead in the first part of the final of the 100 meters. However, he pulled a tendon halfway through the event and was unable to finish. He ended up in 4th place. He later said to the press, "I do not know why my leg gave way. I felt a peculiar twitching after going twenty yards. I then seemed to lose control of it, and suddenly it gave out, throwing me on my face. But that is one of the fortunes of sport, and I cannot complain."[5]
Arthur continued to compete after the Olympics, and again won the AAA in the 100 meters from 1901-1904. He was also a student at Georgetown University, and won the IC4A title in the 100 meters representing Georgetown from 1901-1903. [4]
