Charles had a long and distinguished career in the New Zealand Army.
He was a professional soldier before tWorld War II having been trained at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) at Duntroon, UK, 1917-20.
He served in Libya during World War II where he showed great ability, coolness and gallantry in leading his men in dangerous situations.
