Biography

Charles had a long and distinguished career in the New Zealand Army.

He was a professional soldier before tWorld War II having been trained at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) at Duntroon, UK, 1917-20.

He served in Libya during World War II where he showed great ability, coolness and gallantry in leading his men in dangerous situations.

Officer Commanding (OC) of 34 NZ Anti-Tank Battery, 1939-40. Commanding Officer (CO) of 7 NZ Anti-Tank Battery, 1940. CO of 4 NZ Field Regiment, August 1941. Commander Royal Artillery (CRA) of 3 NZ Division, Pacific Theatre, August 1942 - October 1944.
