James David Drummond, 8th Viscount Strathallan was born on 23 October 1839, the son of William Henry Drummond, 7th Viscount Strathallan and Christina Maria Hersey Baird^[1]. On 11 February 1868 in India, he married firstly Ellen, daughter of Cudbert Bensley Thornhill and Ellen Catherine Soltau^[2]. He married secondly on 27 October 1875 at St James, Perth, Margaret, daughter of William Smythe, of Methven^[3][4][5].

He died on 5 December 1893 at age 54^[6].
