Biography

...Leonard Drowne, 1646-1729, the ancestor of the Drowne family who came from England about 1660, settled and carried on ship building at Kittery, Maine, but in consequence of Indian wars removed his family and business to Boston, Mass., in 1692.[1]

LNAB DROWNE has been merged into several times, continue to use this LNAB until a birth record is found.

Corrected Second Marriage

The second marriage originally shown in this profile, to Mary Abbott Caverly -- widow of William Caverly of Portsmouth -- does not match existing primary records; the marriage record [2] shows this wife as Mary Caley, not Caverly, and the NYGBR piece quoted below names her as the widow of Robert Caley of Malden. Torrey's "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" [3] records the marriage, "by 1688?" of Robert Calley (sic) to a wife named Mary; and William Caverly is not known to have died prior to 1732 -- the year his will was proved -- making a 1707 remarriage of his widow unlikely. Further complicating matters is the unsourced 1705 death date shown in Mary Abbott's profile; no primary source has been found to verify it, but if accurate, it obviously makes a 1707 remarriage impossible. In view of these facts, the second wife has been changed to Mary Unknown Calley.
