Nicholas Rodney Drake was born on 19 June 1948 in Rangoon, Burma, the only son of Rodney Shuttleworth Drake and his wife Mary "Molly" née Lloyd.
Nick was an acoustic singer/songwriter and eventually became an acclaimed influence on other artists; although, during his lifetime, his albums sold poorly. Some of his best-known songs include "Pink Moon", "Way to Blue", "Hazey Jane II", "River Man" and "From the Morning".
Over time, Nick became withdrawn and was known to have extreme difficulties with performing for live audiences. It soon became clear that Nick was suffering from severe depression that ultimately rendered him unable to work or function. As he grew increasingly ill, Nick moved back in with his parents.
It was at his parents' home in Tanworth in Arden, Warwickshire where Nick died at the age of 26. Nick shares a modest headstone with his parents, under an oak tree, in the churchyard at Tanworth. The headstone is inscribed with "Now we rise, and we are everywhere" - lyrics penned by Nick for his song "From the Morning". Nick's death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1974 in the Stratford-upon-Avon district.[1] His estate, worth just over £4000, passed probate on 24 January 1975 in Birmingham.[2]
