Obituary

DANIEL DRAIN DEAD Rockford Dry Good Merchant Passes Away in New York

Daniel Drain who bade good bye to his Rockford friends a short time ago and with his wife started for Scotland, never reached the land of heather. Death interrupted their journey at New York. John Lake received a telegram stating Mr. Drain died in the metropolis today.

The last letter received received from him at New York was ro the effect that he was feeling better. The news of his death in the prime of his life will bring sorrow to many a home in Rockford and vicinity, for he was much respected.

Mr. Drain had been suffering stomach trouble nearly all this year. He thought a trip to Scotland would benefit him and it was the advice of his physicians. He had sought aid here and in Chicago. So he started for the land of his birth accompanied by Mrs. Drain. They were to have sailed from New York several days ago but was detained by illness which finally proved fatal.

Mr. Drain was about 45 years of age. He was well known in business circles, being the owner of the Scotch dry goods house on East State Street. He was formerly a clerk and at one time was employed by Andrew Ashton. He entered into partnership with Archie Reid of Janesville and a few years ago bought him out conducted the business alone. He had always had a neat and inviting store and had nearly all the trade of the Scotch people in this section.

He leaves no children. He has relatives living in the Scotch Settlement.

It was Mr. Drain’s wish that if his illness proved fatal, no matter where death occurred, that his remains be brought to this city for burial. Here was the scene of his struggles to gain a place in this world and here he wished to be buried. This wish will be faithfully complied with but the friends have received no further message regarding the arrangements.

The deceased was a man of rugged honesty. He lived quietly but was always a good example. He had few enemies indeed and on all sides today are heard expressions of regret at his demise. His remains will be followed to the tomb my many sincere mourners. [5]
