Biography

Jess Gregory Doyle was born in 27th November 1911 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She was a daughter of Richard Doyle and Nina Gregory. Jess was the granddaughter and great niece of the famous New South Welsh cricketing brothers, Charles, Dave and Ned Gregory.

2/10th Australian General Hospital

On 10th December 1940, Jess enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service and was posted to the 2/10th Australian General Hospital, based at Malacca, Malaya.

Along with 64 other Australian nurses and many civilians, including women and children, Jess was evacuated from Singapore on 12th February aboard the ill-fated Vyner Brooke. The ship was discovered by the Japanese as it was entering the Bangka Strait two days later, bombed and strafed repeatedly, and sank in twenty minutes.[1]

Nurse Jess (Doyle) MacAuley was a prisoner of war of the Japanese during World War II.

After several hours drifting in the sea, Jess's life-boat found land at Bangka Island, Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) and made her way to the tin-smeltering town of Muntok. There, she became a prisoner of war of the Japanese; held at Bangka Island and Sumatra until September 1945. After being repatriated to Australia, she was discharged from the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 8th April 1946.[2] Jess was mentioned in despatches (the equivalent of today's Commendation for Gallantry) in 1947.[3]

Jess married fellow ex-prisoner-of-war, Norman MacAuley, on 23rd April 1946 at Sydney, New South Wales.[4] They lived in New Zealand for Norman's work; where they had three children:

  1. Peter Gilmour MacAuley
  2. Judith Gilmour MacAuley
  3. Barbara Gilmour MacAuley

Jess passed away in New Zealand and is buried in St John's Anglican churchyard, Upper Hutt, New Zealand.
