John G. Downey born 24 Jun 1827 in the townland of Castlesampson, Taughmaconnell parish, County Roscommon, in central Ireland, to Denis Downey and Bridget Gately. ^[1]

John married 1st to Maria Jesus Guirado, the daughter of a prominent Mexican gentleman of Sonora. She was killed in train accident on January 29, 1883.

John married 2nd to Rosa V. Kelly, of Los Angeles.

John died in 1894 at his home in Los Angeles. He was originally interred at Old Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. After the cemetery was removed, Downey's remains were relocated to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

John was survived by 2 sisters: Mrs Eleanor Martin and Mrs Annie Donahue both of San Francisco; a cousin Bernard Downey; nephews: Peter Martin, J. Downey Harvery of San Francisco.
