Also, knowing that Hugh and Angus were Wine and Spirit Merchants, it's very likely that they were connected to the 'Samuel McCalman/Dow' who established Samuel Dow Limited in 1807 in Glasgow. It "was a wine merchants and whisky bonders based in Glasgow, Scotland. The company was known for its range of blended scotch whiskies and its Public houses around the city of Glasgow.... Samuel Dow Limited was established in 1807 by Samuel McCalman/Dow from Lochaber. He opened a very small bar at 45 King Street/Bridgegate in central Glasgow....."[7]
One mention of the history of the Samuel Dow Ltd wine and spirits company suggest that the McCalman name was anglicized into Dow.[8]
And this discussion suggesting that McCalman meant Dove, turned into Dow (or rather the opposite?)[9] "The name Dove and Dow are Anglicization of the name Calman and appear to have been adopted by descendants of Colman who emigrated to the Lowlands."[10]
In the 1841 census an Angus Dow (age 25), Churchman, was in Candleriggs Smiths CT, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[11]
