Research Notes
James was named procurator on 10 Jul 1505 place his birth befreo 10 Jul 1484.
Allison Weir[7] places the date of death in 1548 but this seems to be incorrect as he is alive in the January of the following year although, that would have been considered 1548 at the time as the year started on the Annunciation.
His sister, Agnes, married Alexander, 5th Lord Livingston, guardian of Mary, Queen of Scots.[8] as his second wife. She was the mother of Mary Livingston, one of the Four Maries who were grew up with the Queen and were her Maids of Honor.
Name Origin: SCOTLAND. The name Douglas originated in Scotland. In Gaelic, the name was Dudhglas, and was translated as "black stream". The Douglases were one of Scotland's most powerful families, and certainly the most prominent family in lowland Scotland during the Late Middle Ages, often holding the real power behind the throne of the Stewart Kings. The heads of the House of Douglas held the titles of the Earl of Douglas (Black Douglas) and later, the Earl of Angus (Red Douglas).[1]

Clan Douglas, also referred to as the House of Douglas, is an ancient family from the Scottish Lowlands taking its name from Douglas, South Lanarkshire, and thence spreading through the Scottish Borderland, Angus, Lothian and beyond. The clan does not currently have a chief, therefore it is considered an Armigerous clan.[3]
