Biography

Birth
George was born at Grimsby, Lincolnshire, on 13 March 1854[1]. the son of William Dowty and his wife Elizabeth, née Haith, who had been married at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Grimsby, on 25 May 1852.[2][3][4]

1861 Census
The 7 April 1861 census records George, aged 7, living at Burrells Buildings, Great Burgess Street, Grimsby, with his parents William and Elizabeth, and younger siblings Ann Elizabeth and John Henry.[5]

1871 Census
The 2 April 1871 census records George, aged 17, occupation Joiner, living at Middle Court, Grimsby, with his parents William and Elizabeth, and younger siblings Ann Elizabeth, John Henry, William, Sarah Jane, Charles, and Ruth.[6]

Marriage
George married Rebecca Vere at the Victoria Street Methodist Chapel, Grimsby, on 10 April 1879. George was described as a Builder of Willingham Terrace, Weelsby.[7][8]

Children
George and Rebecca had two children:

  1. Wilfred Vere, born at Grimsby on 1 March 1880.[9]
  2. Ann Vere, born at Grimsby in 1882.[10]

1881 Census
The 3 April 1881 census records George, aged 27, occupation Builder employing 14 men and 3 boys, living at 7 Maude Street, Grimsby, with his wife Rebecca and son Wilfred Vere (1).[11]

1891 Census
The 5 April 1891 census records George, aged 37, occupation Builder, living at Wood Furze, Abbey Road, Grimsby, with his wife Rebecca and children Wilfred Vere (11) and Ann Vere (9). The family had four servants; Governess Anne Maud Leigh, and general servants Elizabeth Whiting, Ann E. Stowe, and Mary J. Kane[12]

1901 Census
The 31 March 1901 census records George, aged 47, occupation Member of Parliament and Shipowner, living at Waltham Old Hall with his wife Rebecca and children Wilfred Vere (21) and Ann Vere (19). The family had seven servants: Ladies Companion Annie Maud Lee, Footman Arthur Fenn, Housemaid Ann E Stowe, Cook Lillian Wressell, Parlour Maid Ann Jackson, and Kitchen Maids Louisa Brown and Elizabeth Fowler.[13]

Wife's Death
George's wife Rebecca died at Waltham on 14 January 1904.[14][15]

Wife's Burial
George's wife Rebecca was buried at All Saints churchyard, Waltham.[16]

Wife's Probate
Probate for George's wife Rebecca was granted at the London Registry on 5 July 1904 to James Carlile, Solicitor. Effects were £2544 6s 11d.[17][18]

Second Marriage
George married Caroline Eugenia Bertuance Stone at St James' Catholic church, Spanish Place, London, on 15 August 1907.[19]

1911 Census
The 2 April 1911 census records George, aged 57, occupation Member of Parliament, and in the Shipping Industry, resident at Waltham Hall, Lincolnshire, with his wife Eugenie, having been married for 3½ years, his unmarried son Wilfred Vere (31), and servants George Hales, Louisa Purcell, Ethel Farnsworth, and Edith Catchpole.[20]

Death
George died at Waltham on 27 April 1914.[21]

Burial
George was buried at All Saints churchyard, Waltham, with his first wife Rebecca. His memorial inscription reads: "Sir George Doughty, Knight, of Waltham Hall in the County of Lincoln, for 19 years representative of Great Grimsby in Parliament, twice Mayor of the County Borough of Great Grimsby, Justice of the Peace, who departed this life April 27th 1914, aged 61 years."[22]

Probate
Probate was granted at the London Registry on 26 November 1915 to Wilfred Vere Doughty J.P. and John Joseph Burridge solicitor. Effects were £47,906 9s 11d. This was resworn in 1923 to £55,854 4s 11d.[23][24]
