Sarah (Dougherty) Carter is Notable.

Sarah was an American country music musician, singer, and songwriter. She was a member of the Carter Family with her first husband A.P. Carter and first cousin Maybelle (Addington) Carter.

The Carter Family were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970.[1] In 1993, the US Postal Service issued a stamp in their honor.[2]

Sarah Elizabeth Dougherty was born on Jul 21, 1898 in Johnson, Scott County, Virginia, United States, daughter of William Sevier Dougherty (1860–1939) and Nancy Elizabeth Kilgore (1868–1901).[3][4]

In 1900, Sarah E (1) was in the household of her parents and four older siblings and was living in Lipps District, Wise County, Virginia [5]

Sarah (16) married Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (23) (born in Maces Springs, Scott) on Jun 18, 1915 in Scott. Their children were:

Sarah was granted a divorce from A. P. on Oct 15, 1936 in Scott County, Virginia.[6]

Her second husband was Coy Washington Bayes and they were married in Feb of 1939.[7]

Sarah died on Jan 8, 1979 in Lockford, San Joaquin, California, United States, aged 80. She was buried in Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery, Hiltons, Scott County, Virginia.[8] [9] [10]
