Edward Dorsey, II


1 May 1694 - "This Indenture Made the first Day of May in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred Ninty and Foure Beetween Richard Hill of the Province of Maryland Comand.r of the Good Ship Hope of the one p.t and Edward Dorsey Sonn of John Dorsey of y.e same province of the other part. Wittneseth that the said Edward Dorsey Doth hereby with the Consent and approbation of his said father put and build himselfe Ann Apprentice to the said Richard Hill or his Assignes for and Dureing the full Tearme of Foure years from the Day of the Date hereof and y.e said Edward doth hereby Covenant promise and agree to and with the said Richard Hill to sarve him or them truely & faithfully and honestly in all Lawfull Imployment Raleteing to the Act Mistery & favally of A Marriners and that he will Delegently and Carfully Obsarve parforme and execute all his said Masters Lawfull Comands and his Secrets faithfully Keep & not use any unlawfull Gaines as Dyce Cards or others to the prejudice of his said Master & that hee will Redily Willingly and deligently Doe and p.rforme in all respect the Duety of Ann Apprentice Either on this Sale upon or beyond the seas in any part of the World Where his said Masters occasions Requires him In Consideration Whereof the said Richd Hill doth hereby Covenant promise and agree to and with the said Edward Dorsey to Teach and Instruct him in the whole art and mistery of Navigacon or Marriners are to the best of his skill and Cuning And alsoe to find and allowe him the said Edward Meate broonke Washing and Lodging Conveiant and al things Requisitt (Cloathing Bookes & Instruccons Onely Excepted) the which the said John Dorsey the father of the said Edwarddoth p.rmise and oblidge himselfe to fynd and allowe the same dureing the said Tearme of Foure years to the tene p.rformance thereof the p.rties above Menconed have to one p.t of Indentures both of one date and one Tennor Interchangably set our hands & seales y.e day & date abovesaid Edward Dorsey (seale) Rich.d Hill (seale)

Death & Probate

Edward Dorsey died without writing a will. An inventory of his estate was taken in Anne Arundel County by Corneilus Howard on 28 NOV 1701. The value of the inventory of personal posessions was 279.16.8L and included three indentured servants, 3 slaves and a large quatity of animals. He also owned a looking glass and a box of books. [2] An accounting by John Greeniffe and his wife Ruth, the administrix of Edward Dorsey was filed in the probate court on 4 NOV 1703. The couple was living in Baltimore County at this time. [3]

Ramona Duff found the 1698 marriage record of Edward Dorsey and Ruth Hill. On the previous generation, I sometimes wonder if Ely is written in without proof; here I wonder why Hill is not written in as proven. This Edward was apprenticed as a mariner to a Richard Hill, who was likely his future father-in-law. [KP]
