Biography

This biography is from 2 books, the Nichodemus Dorn family Website, His son Dell Dorn his grandson Dell Dorn, Augustus Dorn's Will, wikipedia, Ida Dorn Phair's book, and the research of Pike-2301.
Augustus Van Dorn (Sr) was born about 1785. Augustus Van Dorn was killed on 18 June of 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo. This battle between The Duke of Wellington with his Anglo-allied army along with Prince Blücher versus Napoleon was fought in present day Belgium. At the time the land was The Netherlands that was under the rule of The U. K. Pike-2301 searched for casualties of the battle around 1998 without luck.
Van Dorn Dutch or Netherlands surname meaning, (from the Middle Dutch) Do(o)rne ‘thorn bush’, ‘gorse’, or a habitational name for someone from any of several places in Belgium and the Netherlands called Doorn. Dorn & it's variations came from these 2 small countries that were nicknamed the Low Lands. The surname Dorn meant thorn.
Augustus dropped the Van & one of the o's in Doorn. Researching on the Dorn surname of German & Austria there were few Van Dorn's. Just about every Dorn was spelled Doorn or Dorne and had no Van in front, like Augustus Dorn. This is why Augustus was born in Holland as it's boundary existed in 1815.
Augustus was listed as a farmer in the 1850 Census and in Mercer County with his first wife. His 1st wife is estranged.
Augustus Dorn came to America with a younger brother around 1816 to the New Orleans area. I have information that his first name might be Leopold. No record found of their immigration after there father had been killed at Waterloo fighting against Napoleon. There is no direct evidence of this except his oldest son (Nichodemus') family stated this while I was E-Mailing to California Dorns. I talked to an Augustus relative some 20 yrs. ago (1996). The last name of Dorn was Anglicized from Van Dorn to just Dorn. Pike-2301

His father was killed at the Battle of Waterloo. Augustus and his younger brother, Leopold, were living on the streets of Amsterdam. They were shanghaied and forced to work in the galley of a ship bound for the port of New Orleans. What happened to the brother is not known. We have no information as to his name or where he went after they arrived here. According to family tradition, Augustus stayed in New Orleans for a few years and then migrated to Kentucky.

"Per Mary Ellison HUGHES". Taken fron the Dorn, Puppo Web Site.

The Drum

Augustus may have had an old tattered drum that was his father's during the war. This seems unlikely to me & that Jake Dorn, his son acquired one as a used drum while Jake was in the Militia during the Civil War. He played the drum. The drum had Jacob's name on it. It seems that all of the Jake Dorn children & grandchildren saw it but no one knows its location now. Some said it was destroyed in a fire. That drum was held dear to the hearts of Jake's children and grandchildren.
According to his last Will Jake had a bit of falling out with his children. Maybe that's why sometimes using Wall instead of Dorn was a sign that they disowned Augustus as a father or grandfather.Augustus remarries after Eliza dies. I'll have to find that marriage later. Jake should have inherited his mother's land after Ruth Hawkins Dorn had died.
I was E-Mailing to the west coast branch of Dorns & studied their family tree information around 1996. No other sources could be found at the time. I read the book about Nichodemus and about his travels & early times prospecting for gold & land deals. It was on the web and sources are listed below. I worked on this until I found that it was a long N. A. J. Dorn tree that didn't interface with the Kentucky descendants. I enrolled as a relative of Nichodemus Dorn.
The URL was gone for some time & reappeared later under a different name. Nick, the oldest son finally stayed outside L.A. and was wealthy with judges and lawyers as sons. Pike-2301

Augustus (van) DORN Family Information

Augustus (van) DORN Jr. was born 1803 in HOLLAND. He died before June 4, :1876 in Casey Co., KY USA. HIS Will was written August 1, 1861 and probated 10 :JUN 1876 in Casey County Kentucky. Though one Census stated his pace of birth :is Prussia , I believe Prussia to be bogus. He had command of the English :Language enabling him to move among English speaking persons rather than :settling into a German Community.
He was the son of van DORN (?-1815).
Augustus (van) DORN's first wife was Ruth FLECHER. They were married ABT :1828 in Harrisburg, KY USA. They had two known children named Nicodemus :Andrew Jackson DORN (1829-1903) and Elizabeth DORN.
His second wife was Eliza (WALL ?) WALLS (1818-?). They were married on November 29 1844. They had one known child that survived, named Jacob Anderson DORN (1840-?). There was Augustus Dorn Jr. on the 1850 census but not on the 1860 census & would have been a teen on that date. Jr. must have died.

From Cecilia PUPPO, Puppo_Family.ged Pike-2301 Events and Attributes He immigrated About 1816. via New Orleans

Notes

Father killed in the Battle of Waterloo In June of 1815.
Told by uncle (after his father's death) that it was time to leave Holland. Despite the fact that he (Augustus) should have inherited the estate of Augustus Sr.

Augustus Jr and his brother immigrated about 1816. via New Orleans,

Augustus Dorn

The above written instrument was subscribed by the said Augustus Dorn in our presence and acknowledged by him to each of us and he at the same time published the above instrument and subscribed to be his last will and testament and we at the testators request and in his presence have signed our names as witnesses hereto.

Rueben Station
Sawyer/ Lawyer Black
Casey County Court June 4 1876. A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Augustus Dorn deceased was offered to the court for probate and on the oath of Lawyer / Sayler Black one of the subscribing witnesses hereto was proven in the last will and testament of the said Augustus Dorn deceased and_____ to be recorded.
Attest T. W. Wash CR

Augustus wills out Jake Dorn & leaves his land to his brand new wife. These 200 acres came as Eliza's Dower from her unproven father Whitfield Wall. The Will proves the 2 children from the first marriage. The Census' prove his last two children with Eliza Wall. Pike-2301

On Jacob's birth record it would show him as a Wall because Eliza wasn't married.
