Biography

Johannes Dret married Grietie Plettenberg in Amsterdam, Nederland, in 1652, after entering their banns of marriage on 8 August 1652 in a Reformed Church.

They are recorded as parents of at least three children baptized in Amsterdam between 1655 and 1657; there probably were more children than these.

Johannes and Grietje may have emigrated to New Netherland together between 1657 and 1663. Grietje did emigrate, and Johannes was dead before April 1663, as Grietje Plettenberg, recorded as the widow of Jan Doreth, married Willem van der Schuuren in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, on 6 April 1663.

Research Notes

Some of the surnames that are recorded for his daughter are similar to those of Josias Drats, husband of Aeltje Brouwer, who is also indexed under "de Raet" in the Bergen, New Jersey Genealogical Society PDF.

A Josias Dret is in New York colony baptizing his daughter Catherine in 1691 with his wife Aeltie Adolfs. See

Disambiguation

This is not the Jan Doreth who married Rijckje van Dyck in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, in 1654. Records show this man in Amsterdam, Nederland, around that time, married to Griete van Plettenberg and having children with her.

Jan and Rijckje left a will stating that they had children between them.[11]

Is there a source for this statement in the Disambiguation: "This is not the Jan Doreth of Albany who married Rijckje van Dyck in New Amsterdam. Jan and Rijckje left a will stating that they had children between them.".

I've seen the will for Rijckjes's parents but not for her.

That statement was added by Carrie Quackenbush back in 2017. (She was my predecessor as Project Leader for New Netherland.) I suggest that you send her a message and see if she remembers...

Apparently this profile conflates two different men.
  1. Jannetjen Dereth was baptized in Amsterdam in January 1655. Her father was recorded as Johannes Dret and her mother was Grietgen Plettenburgh. (See profile for Jannetjen: Dereth-1.)
  2. Meanwhile, Jan Dareth was married to Rijkje Van Dijck in New Amsterdam in November 1654. (See profile for Rijkje: VanDyke-245.)

Two different people...
