Claire Dodd was an American actress who starred in over 60 films from 1930 to 1942. Though she was often cast as "the other woman," in real life, she was known as a "mystery girl" for keeping her personal life private.[1]
Dorothy Anne Dodd was born in 1911 to Walter E. Dodd and Ethel Viola Cool.[2]
She moved to California in 1927 and worked as a model while auditioning for films. She was cast in her first film role in 1930. She also caught the eye of Florenz Ziegfeld, who cast her in a Broadway musical as well as in the Ziegfeld Follies. She worked steadily in uncredited roles throughout 1931. She also secretly married John Milton Strauss in that year. By 1932, she was cast in numerous credited roles and continued to work steadily over the next decade. She surprised Hollywood in 1936 with the birth of her first child; no one even knew she was married.
Claire retired from acting when she married her second husband, Harry Brand Cooper; they had 4 children. She died in 1973.[3]
